The Least of Creatures

cardinal
I sit at the kitchen table, work,
And watch the birds.
I take a break and snap a picture.

The snow has come
And the birds have nothing to eat.

“Look at the birds in the sky. They don’t sow seed or harvest grain or gather crops into barns. Yet your heavenly [Parent] feeds them.”
– Jesus, Matthew 6:26 (CEB)

Surrogate “heavenly Parent,”
I keep the feeders filled,
The water full,
Even for the birds I don’t care for as much.

What if it was so simple
To care for ALL those in need?
Bless all in need this day.
Bless all who mourn, who fear, who are in danger.
Guide me, that I may be your hands and heart in the world.

  1. thank you! love the line, “Even for the birds I don’t care for as much.” and of course, “What if it was so simple
To care for ALL those in need?” The community where I live is struggling hard with the people who are homeless and those who are houseless by choice… what does it mean, to care for all? And then because they ruin not only their own lives and the lives of their families, but the personal property of others, those who cook Meth and produce BHO etc in their own homes and or in the properties they rent. And the list goes on. blessings!

    1. Thank you, Beth….when I see a cardinal I am reminded to “look up” and sometimes I literally have to “look up” into the treetops when I hear their song…the presence of the cardinal is a sign to me of my mother’s spirit as it was her favorite bird…blessings to you and yours…
