Sitting in the Shadowlands

20140807-064443-24283550.jpg

When the one you love
is no longer there,
hidden in the shadowlands
between life and death.
When all you can do is hold his hand,
stroke her cheek.

When tears leak out
at the smallest kindness,
or pour down your cheeks
like they will never stop.

When valiant caregivers
have done all they can
and can do no more.

When there are no words,
when there is no comfort,
when you are lost
in the shock and the grief.

You are not alone.
You are surrounded with love
of family
of friends
of those who have gone before.

You and he are held in light,
you and she are surrounded by love.
Do not fear for you are flanked by angels.
You are Beloved of the Holy One.

Prayer for Those Who Are Traveling

20140804-063600-23760120.jpg

The Pilgrim’s Aiding
By Mary McDonald

God be with you in every pass,
Jesus be with you on every hill,
Spirit be with you on every stream,
Headland and ridge and lawn;

Each sea and land, each moor and meadow,
Each lying down, each rising up.
In the trough of the waves, on the crest of the billows.
Each step of the journey you go.

From Carmina Gadelica by Alexander Carmichael, Vol. 3, p. 195.

Traveling today to the 5-Day Academy for Spiritual Formation on Celtic Spirituality. I’ll be facilitating worship. Today the leadership team travels to the camp and tomorrow the participants arrive.

Loving God, your presence, be with us.
Traveling mercies for all who travel.
Be in our hearts, in our longings.

Your wisdom for those who lead,
Your peace in every retreatant,
Your hospitality in our welcome.

Let us make space for you.
Amen.

Too Much

20140728-055136-21096839.jpg

Some days
It seems like
Too much to bear

Too much sickness
Too much dying
Too many stories of terror and sadness

How can I bear it.
These people I love
Are crazy with grief and fear.
This world I love
Has lost all sense and reason

I watch, I weep, I wait.
I wait for you to show up
With your healing,
Your comfort,
Your wisdom

Come quickly.
Please,
Come, soon.
Come

The Hurting Places

photo (4)

There is a world of hurt around me today
And my heart fills with pain.
Sometimes I hear myself saying,
“All I can do is pray.”

And then I remember that praying
Is not such a small thing.
Sometimes it is the only thing,
The one true thing for this hurting world.

Healing God, send your wholeness.
Loving Christ, your strength,
Holy Spirit, your comforting presence,
To all who hurt,
To all who struggle,
To all who mourn.
Amen.

Bless This Day

2014-07-16 06.40.13-1

Bless this day,
All plants and creatures,
All peoples near and far.

Bless the flowers
That sing praise with their beauty,
The grass
That cushions my step.

Bless those who stand
With loved ones who are sick,
With friends or family who are lost.
Bring healing, bring wholeness.

Bless the world,
Its war torn places,
Its broken villages,
Its frightened children.

Bless our bodies,
Our hearts,
Our hands,
That we may be blessings
To all that we meet.
